Are You A Legalist? Is Your Pastor or Bible Teacher a Legalist?
Often the legalist use bible texts out of their proper contexts to support their legalistic or moralistic form of spirituality (including hyper-spirituality). It has been said that a “text out of context is a pretext” – without following the proper principles of biblical interpretation.
By nature we are all legalists, so therefore, we all need to continuously hear the proper distinction between Law and Gospel in order to have a better understanding of the Holy Scriptures. But unfortunately most of us are not listening, learning or even experiencing the Centrality of the Gospel or the proper biblical understanding of Law and Gospel.
Most of the sermons we listen to are filled with Moralism and Legalism, and not Gospel Saturated,Christ-centered,Cross-focused. So as a result, these sermons produces moralistic-legalistic Christians with a significant lack of understanding and experience of the Centrality of the Gospel in the christian life.
I would highly recommend the careful systematic and contextual reading, studying and reflection on the books of Romans, Galatians and Hebrews; and also learn from other Biblically-sound, Christ-centered, Cross-focused, Gospel-saturated, Spirit-empowered and Grace-based Teachers.
“The gospel is good news for losers, not winners. It’s for those who long to be freed from slavery of believing that all of their significance, meaning, purpose, and security depend on their ability to become a better you.” – Tullian Tchividjian
